About the event

This workshop will provide tools applicable to music educators at all levels, culminating in a personalized practice that will help navigate the challenges present in our chosen profession.

Dr. Kevin Miescke will explore topics such as the fear of rejection, shame, impostor syndrome, and overwhelm, and will provide ideas for how to work with these difficulties through mindfulness-based practices. Participants will be guided through breath awareness exercises, an introductory body scan, and will design and practice their own self-compassion exercise tailored to their individual needs.

At the conclusion of this session, you will leave with knowledge of what mindfulness is (and isn’t), several mindfulness exercises, and tips for how to incorporate mindfulness into the bursting schedule of a music educator.

Kevin Miescke has a Doctor of Music degree in Horn Performance from Indiana University and is a certified instructor in Mindfulness-Based Wellness and Pedagogy. In addition to MBWP, Kevin’s training in mindfulness and meditation has included workshop retreats at Spirit Rock Meditation Center, and online work in Mindful Self-Compassion with Kristen Neff. As an instructor, Kevin offers mindfulness training to musicians of all ages and abilities, helping them foster a calmer mental state while practicing and performing. Kevin also runs a podcast called the Mindful Musical Life Podcast, where he interviews guests about the connection of contemplative practices, mental training, and music. Kevin has presented mindfulness for musicians at Oklahoma State University, the University of Nevada-Reno, University of Idaho, and numerous music and arts organizations.
