About the event

In this workshop, session participants will unpack the foundations of mindfulness and mindful practice as they relate to music teaching and learning. We will explore strategies for incorporating mindfulness principles into a range of music classroom settings. 

Moreover, we will also focus on how mindfulness can be applied toward shaping healthy learning environments. The workshop will include opportunities for participants to interactively apply newfound knowledge and tools to various classroom learning scenarios, so as to experience how mindfulness might be put into practice. 

Participants will leave with a range of tools to cultivate mindful awareness among their students, as well as within themselves.

Dr. Lisa Martin currently serves as Assistant Professor of Instruction with the Ohio Honors Program at Ohio University. Prior to her appointment at OU, she served as Associate Professor of Music Education at Bowling Green State University.  She he holds a bachelors degree in music education from the University of Illinois, and she earned both MME and PhD degrees from the University of Colorado Boulder. Prior to her work in higher education, she spent nine years teaching band and orchestra in Illinois and Colorado, specializing in instruction at the middle school level. She continues to work with P-12 student musicians through various clinics, workshops, and honor groups. Her research centers on assessment practices, teacher wellness, and school choice as related to music education. She currently serves as Associate Editor of Music Educators Journal, and her research has been published in the Journal of Music Teacher Education, Bulletin of the Council for Research in Music Education, and the Journal of Historical Research in Music Education. In her free time, she enjoys hiking, knitting, and practicing martial arts.
